The Elven Prince

“With the combined power of the
crown you now hold and the crystal eye
I already possess…
I will become the TRUE elf king!”

Quick Guide

Detailed Walkthrough

Well, now that the most tedious part of the game is behind us, let’s go kick some butt!

First, we need to travel to the Marsh Cave and get the crown back. Why is the crown in a cave, you ask? That’s a good question that I’m sure has a good answer. Unfortunately, I don’t have it. Anyways, to get to the Marsh Cave, we need to head west from Elfheim and then turn north when we reach some mountains. After a short distance, you will see a valley between mountains on your left. Take this path, and then proceed south. You should soon come across a marshy area that is home to a cave.

Inside the Marsh Cave we are immediately presented with a fork in the path. You should take the north branch first if you want to collect all the treasure or take the south branch first if you want to just get in and get out. Please refer to these maps for route and treasure information.

The entrance to the Marsh Cave immediately present a fork in the path

The bat: A spelunker’s mortal enemy. They can’t hurt you, but you’ll come to hate them more than anything else you’ll encounter here.

032 - Piscodemon

BOSS: Piscodemons

This isn’t so much as boss fight as it is a fight against normal monsters that are a much higher level than you, and serves as an introduction to “forced encounters”. Every time you step on the tile in front of the treasure chest, you’ll face between 1 and 6 Piscodemons, depending on your luck. You should have your team focus on one Piscodemon at a time to reduce the number of incoming attacks. Piscodemons are weak to the Thunder line of spells, so having the Black and Red Mages cast Thunder/Thundara will yield the best results. If the Piscodemons only attack the warrior in you group, great. If they attack anyone else, they are going to be hurting. Have your lowest damage-dealing character hand out potions if your healer can’t keep up.

Once you have defeated the Piscodemons and obtained the Crown, it’s time to get out of this cave! After exiting, you should either use a tent, cottage, or return to Elfheim for healing. Once you are ready, it’s time to visit Astos in the Western Keep. To get there, travel west from Elfheim and then turn north once you reach the mountains. When you reach the valley the leads to the Marsh Cave, continue north. You should soon come to a lake. The castle on its northern shore is the Western Keep.

After entering the castle, proceed to the throne room. BE SURE TO SAVE BEFORE ENTERING! The “king” will reveal that he is really the Dark Elf Astos and attack your party to retrieve the crown.

Western Keep

The great Forest Amoeba slowly consumes the invading castle.

033 - Astos

BOSS: Astos

I’m not going to lie to you; This fight is tough, and it may mark the first time a member of your team dies. Astos knows several spells that can instantly kill a character, and he usually opens the battle using one of them. (If you’re OCD like me and try to keep everyone’s experience identical, this is especially frustrating). Some versions of Final Fantasy include the Phoenix Down item, which will allow you to revive a character. If you have access to these, this battle can be made significantly easier.

If you took my advice and purchased Haste back in Elfhiem, this is your first opportunity to really put it to use. Haste your most potent melee attacker first (usually the Warrior or Monk, depending on gear and levels) and watch them pile on the damage. After hastening, Fire and Fira are the most effective spells for Red and Black Mages for the rest of the battle. Besides being able to kill you instantly, Astos also packs quite a punch, so remember to keep an eye on everyone’s health and heal as needed.

After defeating Astos, you are now in possession of the Crystal Eye. Remember anyone needing one of these? It’s time to head back to Matoya’s Cave.

After you give the Crystal Eye to Matoya, she will give you the Jolt Tonic to wake up the sleeping Elven Prince. Now it’s time to head back across the sea, again.

Once you get back to the Elven Castle, you should talk to the elf that is taking care of the prince. She will take the Jolt Tonic and use it to wake the Prince. Once awake, he will give you the Mystic Key.

Finally! Now we can open all of the doors that were previously locked! Here is a list showing what is behind each locked door. If the item does not help your group, and you don’t feel like going back for it, then don’t. There is no prize for collecting every treasure chest in this game.

This jolt tonic may be just what we need to break the curse and awaken the prince!

“Jolt Tonic”? In the original version the item that wakes the Price is the HERB. I feel there might be a bit of censorship happening here…

Castle Cornelia

Chaos Shrine

Elven Castle

Marsh Cave

Western Keep

The only item that you need to move on is found in Castle Cornelia. It’s in the rightmost treasure chest of the western treasure room and is called Nitro Powder. Once you have this, it’s time to go a visit the dwarves. To reach them, sail straight west from the Cornelia port, then follow the coastline north till you reach a port. After docking, head southwest. You should soon see a cave entrance.

It’s crowded inside Mount Duergar, that’s for sure! There are a lot of treasure chests to collect here as well. If you follow the tunnel south, you will find Nerrick, a dwarf that is very interested in your Nitro Powder. Give it to him, and he will open up a passage to the rest of the world!

The Light Warriors obtain the Nitro Powder (TNT)

This seems like it should go on the list of famous last words.
